So examine your life in light of eternity. Yet, the truth is, today could be your last day alive. Live with no regrets – How would you live today if you knew it was your last day on earth? Would you live any differently if you knew you would die tomorrow? My guess is that you would. Scripture is quite clear that we will be judged not by what we believed, but by what we did. How terrifying it would be to hear the words, “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into eternal fire…”Īre you living in such a way that you can be confident that Christ will say to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant”? Your life proves what is in your heart. Yet, substantively, if you look at their lives, there is hardly any difference between them and a wordly person who does not know God. ![]() Maybe they have a rosary hanging from their rear view mirror. Many like to claim the name of Catholic or Christian. This passage should strike a holy fear into your heart, for we will all be judged on our works. That isn’t to say that we can’t relax, enjoy ourselves or have fun, but true wisdom keeps these things in moderation and does not seek a life of pleasure at the expense of one’s soul.Ģ. These considerations should motivate us to use our time well and not waste it on frivolous activities that have no benefit. We could live another 20, 30 or 40 years-or we could die on the way to work this morning. Time is also extremely limited in quantity, and none of us knows exactly how much we have. Moreover, what we do with our time will last for eternity. A moment, once possessed, can never be recaptured. Use of Time – Time is a precious resource. Here are five benefits to reflecting on the fact that you will die.ġ. ![]() Rather, the saints thought about death because it helped them live a better life. This exhortation is not out of a kind of macabre obsession or morbid fascination. There is a long tradition of Memento Mori in Catholicism, and the saints constantly speak of the importance of meditating on the unavoidable fact of death. I don’t know how, or when, or what the cause will be. You see, while most of us would rather not admit it, there is one undeniable fact we must face-sooner or later, we each will die. Far from being merely depressing, the thought of death can be quite motivating, and that motivation can be put to good use. The traffic sign isn’t actually all that innovative, it simply borrows a page from the book of Catholic spirituality- Memento Mori, or remembrance of one’s death. Don’t take any foolish chances, the sign warns us as we speed down the highway. After all, 556 people thought they would make it safely home, but they didn’t. It’s to make you drive carefully-to wear your seatbelt, to think twice before you drive while drunk, or even more relevant recently, reconsider before you text and drive. The purpose of the sign isn’t to ruin your day. ![]() At the beginning of last year the number was zero. It is certainly sobering to see the number rise each week. On the freeway near my home is a rather somber flashing sign that updates travelers on the number of traffic deaths for the year.

Precipitation in Los Angeles didn’t stop striking writers from turning out in force at key picket locations on the third day of the work stoppage against Hollywood’s major employers. (Pictured top: “Jeopardy” writers Michele Loud, Jim Rhine and Billy Wisse) DAY 3 (May 4) And so the universal realization of where this industry is headed has made this a much more united fight.” They’re trying to do that with actors, they’re trying to do that with directors and with crew members. They’re not just trying to do that with writers. They’re trying to turn Hollywood into Uber. They’re trying to turn Hollywood work into pay-by-the-day, or maybe paid by the week with no guarantees. “The corporations are trying to turn Hollywood work into gig work. This is a fight that we’re all going through to greater extent,” Meighan said as he walked the line around Amazon. “I really feel like the entire town is united in this fight. The climate in industry labor circles is very different this time around, he said. Patrick Meighan, a longtime writer-producer on Fox’s “Family Guy,” echoed the sentiments of many WGA veterans who were active as strike captains and organizers during the 2007-08 strike. AI, the minimum staffing and guaranteed weeks, the demands of feature writers who are fed up with pressure for unpaid rewrites. WGA members are plainly angry at the issues that AMPTP did not address or make counter offers on after weeks at the negotiating table. Across the dozen picket sites, writers have focused on the loss of opportunity for young writers breaking in and the threat that poses to the profession’s long-term future. Honks and shouts were heard steadily but otherwise the pickets were pretty quiet in the first few hours of the morning.įour days in, resolve among WGA members is clearly strong. A sprinkling of security guards in the area bordered by the Culver Steps outdoor shopping and dining area kept a close eye on WGA pickets and Amazon’s property line. “There was always some sense that writers were partners in it.”ĭown the street and around the corner, WGA West volunteers Victoria and Chris worked behind a folding table stacked with water and snacks to fuel the line that snaked in a V-shape down Ince Avenue and Washington Boulevard, around the entrances to Amazon properties. “They never tried to make it a gig economy before,” Wisse said. “They’re asking some people to work day-to-day,” Rhine said, noting that he’s heard chapter and verse in recent days from fellow WGA members about mini room experiences. But they see the bigger threat posed by the structural changes afoot in the television business. The trio were quick to emphasize their good fortune to be employed for so long by a stable, year-round show. ![]() Wisse’s view is that the strike is part of a larger fight for the matter of being “fairly compensated for the labor you give,” he said. ![]() Without us it’s just an empty blue screen.” “Our words are on the screen every night,” Loud told Variety. ![]() Meets or Exceeds Standards for ANSI 250.4 and ANSI 250. Such a list shows that if a bug is discovered, it won’t take too long before it’s squished, although that might lead to other bugs, and the process never stops. One of the great advantages of this software is that improvements are introduced and bugs are squashed on a frequent basis: since November 2020, over a dozen updates were released (the version number is actually its release date), and the number of tweaks to existing features are too numerous to mention here, but all of it is listed in Shotcut’s News page. ![]() You can also configure the look and its windows however you please. For instance, you have six different interfaces, like audio effects and video effects, which you can toggle using the small menu top right of the screen: choose Logging, Editing, FX, Color, Audio, and Player to access them, and their titles are self explanatory. If you know your opponent is going to block then you can potentially put yourself in a favourable position, like at a considerable frame advantage – but then they might know you’re trying to do that… This furthers the paranoia that comes with each encounter. However, depending on what button the player had blocked puts them into a different situation. You can also hit Block and it basically negates the Reversal Edge. However, there’s a little bit more to it than meets the eye. Fighting games are all mind-games, conditioning someone so you can make a hard read on what they’re going to do next and punishing them for it, but by boiling it down to a literal guessing game that can be activated at a button push might be a bit too far. Controversially, if both players guess the same thing twice, the player who instigated the Reversal Edge wins the exchange. This will, no doubt, cause a bit of controversy within the fighting game community while its nuances are figured out.Ī beats K, K beats B, B beats A, and the winner is treated to a little cinematic depending on what button they won with. Reversal Edge seems aimed at new players, a one-button activation which can be held down and will parry all incoming shots before delivering one and starting a cinematic ‘rock paper scissors’ guessing game. There are two new main systems in SoulCalibur 6. A successful Guard Impact will basically break an opponent’s pressure and allow you to start some of your own, but of course, they can try to Guard Impact you back! It’s a total mind-game, because if you’re baited into throwing out a Guard Impact, they’re extremely punishable. Guard Impacts – performed by pressing towards your opponent and block at the same time – have been the central mechanic of the combat since the original SoulCalibur and are what make it so interesting. ![]() You need to think about where you are at all times and try to take the best course of action. ![]() There’s a much greater emphasis on 3D movement in SoulCalibur – spacing is key, but also position, as some moves will hit dodging opponents and Ring Outs are a lot more frequent in SC than any other fighting game and a crucial part of victory. You have three attack buttons – horizontal and vertical attacks and a kick – as well as a button to block. ![]() SoulCalibur is, at its core, a simple game. This game is a return to form for the series, and then some. For a series so beloved, SoulCalibur (and Soul Edge) has as many rough games as it does great games, with 3, 4 and 5 all representing a few missteps be it due to mechanical bugs, an over-reliance on guest and user-created characters or just some straight-up baffling design choices. Another one? Another classic fighting game series back with a new installment and SoulCalibur 6 continues the trend of all of them being pretty bloody good. ![]() ![]() ![]() The story, about a writer searching for his missing wife, is still creepy, and its world is populated with a cast of interesting characters. What?s especially frustrating about Alan Wake Remastered on the Switch is that it?s not hard to see why the game is so well-regarded. In theory, I guess, this could?ve added to the tension by making things hiding in the dark that much more mysterious, but in practice, it just looks even uglier. Seeing as Alan Wake is, rather famously, a game where your flashlight is your greatest weapon, you can probably guess a) how much of the game is spent in darkness, and b) what this means for the game?s performance on the Switch. Unfortunately, everything looks even worse when action switches to nighttime, when on top of the above issues, everything suddenly gets a lot darker and harder to see. Everything looks blurry and unfocused, the characters look like they stepped out of a game from the original Xbox, and the scenery looks flat and unfinished. While the cutscenes are mostly passable, the moment it switches back to the game, it looks atrocious. To be blunt, Alan Wake Remastered?s performance on the Switch is absolutely abysmal. Without knowing anything about the other versions of the game, I feel confident in saying that this was a bad way to experience the game for the first time. It wasn?t until it came out on the Switch, though, that the stars aligned and I finally got to play it. I remember hearing nothing but good things about it back when it came out on the Xbox 360, and the Remastered version was constantly tempting me. Up until now, I?d never played Alan Wake before. Newsted's bass is inaudible and the blame can be laid squarely at the feet of Ulrich and Hetfield. There's the furious opener Blackened – a Newsted co-write – and the epic anti-war single One, but the sound of their fourth full-length is still the cause of much debate between Metallica fans of a certain age. And here's the rub: the nine songs on Justice are immense and see the band lean into some truly prog-like arrangements. It still sounds fantastic and was a perfect way of introducing their new bassist to the fanbase. – Garage Days Re-Revisited, a collection of covers by Killing Joke, Misfits, Holocaust, Budgie and Diamond Head. To go with the laptop's stellar display is a quad-speaker sound system. Samsung put both USB-C ports on the left side, limiting flexibility when charging. Regardless of what's inside, the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra has the same great display, a 16-inch AMOLED panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 2,880x1,800-pixel resolution. This is still $500 less than the top MacBook Pro, with the same amount of memory and storage. This configuration is more expensive, starting at $2,800 with 512GB of storage or $3,000 with 1TB. Of course, the 4070 improves its gaming capabilities, too. Josh Goldman/CNETįor those with more challenging content-creation needs, the Ultra can be configured with a faster Core i9 processor, 32GB of RAM and a midrange 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 for faster graphics performance. The 16-inch AMOLED display is certainly a highlight. ![]() (You can see more of our test results at the end of this review.) The latest 16-inch MacBook Pro ran for an incredible 24 hours and 34 minutes, benefitting from Apple making both its hardware and software. Reaching 10 hours and 34 minutes on our streaming video test, the Samsung lasted pretty long considering its higher-performance components and AMOLED display, which draw more power than those designed to sip power. However, there is one place the Ultra (or any other Windows laptop) can't keep up with the MacBook Pro: battery life. The processing performance is enough to keep up with its competition, while the entry-level graphics chip gives the Ultra a boost to smoothly handle undemanding content creation and gaming. The Ultra I tested is $2,400 and doubles the storage of the base model from 512GB to 1TB but is otherwise the same: 13th-gen Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory and GeForce RTX 4050 discrete graphics. It's not available in Australia, but the UK price converts to AU$4,575. The Galaxy Book 3 Ultra (hereafter referred to as the Ultra) starts at $2,200 or £2,449 in the UK.
